I Would Be The Sunlight In Your Universe

A couple weeks ago I was driving around with a couple of buddies. Jokingly, one of these friends started talking about a movie, that he would star in, featuring a soundtrack completely comprised of cheesy 80's songs. This was followed by me popping in The Cure's greatest hits into my CD player (not that The Cure are all that cheesy). We then started naming songs and figured out what part of the film the song would play. For example, the song "Boys Don't Cry" could make a decent song for the opening credits.

This got me thinking. What songs would make up the soundtrack to my life so far? There are certain criteria for figuring out the soundtrack to your life:

1. There has to be a song or songs that have some sort of meaning to you.
2. There has to be at least one song with lyrics that almost perfectly fit in with a certain period of your life.
3. There have to be songs with specific moods. Happy, depressing, whatever.
4. There have to be songs that don't make sense at all.

Now, number 3 is the most important of the criteria despite its position on the list. The purpose of music on a soundtrack is to enhance or create a certain mood in any given scene, so the purpose of a song on the soundtrack to your life should do the same for any given moment or period of your life.

Number 4? Well, every OST has at least one song on it that just doesn't fit, but for whatever reason it's there and somehow belongs. I've just realized that two songs exist that totally fit this. The first song is Aerosmith's "I Don't Want To Miss a Thing." This song makes no sense to my soundtrack at all. I don't like the song one bit, nor do I hate it. The song pretty much just exists. Still, I'm forever haunted by that song for one strange reason. Every once in a while the song pops in my head out of nowhere. This isn't all that strange seeing as though all sorts of songs pop in my head out of nowhere. What is strange is within a day of that song popping into my head I will hear that song played. In fact, it doesn't even have to be in my head. Just the mere mention of that song and I am guaranteed to hear it within 24 hours. I will not be surprised if, when I get home tonight, I'll start to flip through the movie stations and Armageddon will be on with that song playing. It never fails.

The second number 4 song is Eric Clapton's "Change The World." I cannot escape this freaking song. It just can't be done. The song is everywhere. I step into the mall and the overhead speakers are blaring, "I would be the sunlight in your universe." I eat dinner and the restaurant band is singing, "You would think my love was really something good." I'm sitting in some chick I'm dating's car and she puts in a mixed CD and all of a sudden I hear Clapton, "Baby if I could ch-yay-yay-ange the world." I give up. This has been going on for years, and I'm not exaggerating. It makes no sense to me. It doesn't fit into my soundtrack at all, but damn it if it doesn't belong there.

Anyway, I need to think more about what other songs make my soundtrack. Please, those of you who think you know me, don't try to predict what songs I'll pick like I know you're going to. Instead, why don't you come up with your own.

i don't think i'll be able to narrow it down. But my one song that wouldn't fit would be that song from beauty and the beast where belle sings "i want adventure in the great wide somewhere" cept it does kinda fit under #2 also.
