Vera, Chuck and Dave
Here's the thing about The Beatles. You could make a decent argument for any of their albums to be considered their best, and that's part of what makes them so great. That being said I totally understand why people consider Sgt. Peppers the Beatles' best album and why others, according to Rolling Stone mag, even consider it the best rock album of all time. I, however, wouldn't put it on the top of either one of those lists, but it'd still be high up there.
So what makes Sgt. Peppers so great? Peppers was the Beatles at their most daring and they pulled it off so well. You can listen to Peppers and hear all the work that the four brits put into the work and you just know George Martin was loving every bit of it. It is a solid album all the way through with some moments that not only stood out but killed any other sort of noise that you thought was decent. It is a great album. There's no question to that, and while I disagree with its placement on the list I can't really argue against it.
Highlighted Songs:
She's Leaving Home - John and Paul were getting some slack by some of their artsy friends that they didn't do a good job of telling complete stories. Paul tried to tackle that here with a story of a girl running away from home and into the world. Beautiful song.
Being For The Benefit of Mr. Kite - Only John Lennon could be inspired to write an entire song based off of a circus poster.
Within You Without You - George was way into Ravi Shankar (Nora Jones' dad) and Indian music. He tried take that influence into his music. It worked.
When I'm Sixty-Four - Fun song. Sometimes Paul tries these fun songs and they don't quite work out as well as he'd like. This one totally worked.
A Day In The Life - My personal favorite Beatles' song. Everything about the song is epic. Although the lyrics essentially mean nothing you still feel it. And that is the mark of some good music. Great song. Almost every band since has tried to write their own A Day In The Life and most suck it up.
Anyway, that's it. Kind of forced. Oh well. Like I said, I have some stuff brewing in me so I'll be back shortly.
